What is a lobe compressor? A lobe pump , or rotary lobe pump , is a type of positive displacement pump. It is similar to a gear pump except the lobes are designed to almost meet, rather than touch and turn each other.

Lobe pumps are similar to external gear pumps in operation in that fluid flows around the interior of the casing. Unlike external gear pumps , however, the lobes do not make contact. Lobe contact is prevented by external timing gears located in the gearbox. Pump shaft support bearings are located in the gearbox, and since the bearings are out of the pumped liqui pressure is limited by bearing.

The rotating lobes create expanding volumes on the inlet of the pump where the fluid flows into the cavity and is trapped and carried around by the lobes to the outlet of the pump. The pumping action of the rotary lobe pump principle is generated by the counter rotation of two pumping elements (rotors) within a chamber (rotor case).
