Schrader valve nut

Schrader valve nut

This adapter nut fills in the Schrader hole in the rim so the Presta valve is centered and not rubbing on one side. It installs without removing the tire, a real convenience. The core has a short outer thread which is screwed into the inner thread of the stem. The visible outer thread of the stem holds the dust cap.

The valve stem opens by unscrewing a knurled (textured) nut at the top. Unlike a Schrader , the system doesn’t use a check valve—it seals entirely based on pressure in the tube or tire. Halfords Schrader Valve Kit is rated 5. If your rims are only Presta, not so much.

And you don’t have to have a Presta valve for tubeless. Presta valves always come with that little nut on them, and for a long time, I dutifully screwed the nut on and off whenever I had to change out a tube. But what does the nut actually do? It certainly does not hold the tube in place.

The tube is inside the tire and will not go anywhere. Short valve cores suitable for all Schrader type valves. The Schrader is the traditional valve you find on car tires and many bicycle inner tubes. In the whole scheme of the universe, any valve will do.

Still, for most avid mountain bike riders, the Presta valve is superior. Much better product than the rubber grommets. These simply screw onto the Presta valve on the outside of the rim after the tube is mounted.

It can be a little tricky to get the valve perfectly straight in the Schrader hole so the nut can sit flush on the rim holding the valve straight. Presta valves are much thinner and have a very tiny knurled nut on the end that you need to unscrew to let air in and out. These are generally found on road bikes and increasing numbers of higher-end mountain and hybrid bikes.

The usual procedure is to push the pump head on the valve , lock it in place with a lever (which depresses the central stalk), then pump away. When you remove the pump hea the central stalk automatically pops back up, closing the valve. A Schrader has no nut securing the valve.

It does have a valve core which can be unscrewed for replacement or to let the air out of the tire, but you should leave that alone. Schrader valves are generally found on children’s bikes, hybrids and mountain bikes. If instead you mean Presta, there are several good descriptions here on how to inflate one. Make sure the lock nut on the valve is secured to the rim Loosen the valve core lock nut to fill the tire Tighten the valve core lock nut when filling is complete Use a quality tire pump with a good air chuck designed for a PRESTA VALVE Use a PRESTA VALVE to SCHRADER VALVE sparingly when there is. Your new tubes definitely come with them.
