The shorter, less formal term is furo (風呂). Basically, they’re small hot tubs. In their most classic form, they’re short, steep-sided wooden hot tubs. The art of wood and water all started in Japan over three hundred years ago where the people discovered the healing benefits of buoyancy in hot water.
